After many delays in a two-year build, Brian and Jennifer were finally able to move into
their dream house just in time for the Christmas season. They were excited about
decorating each room with Christmas lights, trees, and decorations and enjoy a peaceful
Christmas together in their new home.

When the news came to their attention that one of Sudanese families that their church had
adopted were removed from their housing, Jennifer felt a pull to give them a financial gift.
When she went to them with the check, she sensed the Lord telling her to be open to do
more. She and Brian went to the Lord in prayer asking what He would have them do. His
call to them was more than they anticipated…the answer was to invite this family into their
ypyhome over the weeks leading to Christmas and beyond. They agonized over whether to
follow the Lord’s call…certainly they had a right to enjoy their first Christmas in their new
home without the chaos of a huge family that they didn’t know.

Peace came to them as they decided to give them the invitation. The family was deeply
moved to be rescued in this way. Mom, dad, seven kids, grandma, grandpa, two dogs, and
three cats moved in ten days before Christmas. They lived very different lives than Brian
and Jennifer, which caught them by surprise. They were loud, and at times intrusive, yet
they knew that it was what God had compelled them to do.

This is what it can look like to be a gift to others. It means to give up on our own agendas
and allow God to use us, our talents, and resources to bless others. Just as Mary and Joseph
were obedient to allow God to alter their lives, marriage plans, and life as a couple to be a
part of bringing Immanuel (God with us) into the world. The cost could include
humiliation and belittlement from their community, and an uncomfortable journey,
amongst other things.

As we enter this Christmas season of giving, it is important that we be willing to respond to
God and respond Him with the willingness to give of ourselves…whatever that might look
like. This is what worship looks like.
