This past Sunday at Worship Service, we sang the song “Holy Desire”. The first stanza in
the song says, “May we burn with a fire, a holy desire for You”. This statement expresses
the desire to have a longing for Christ that is so deep that it burns within our soul. Here is
the question: do you, today, long deeper for Christ more than anything else? The “correct”
“Jesus-follower” answer would seem to be YES, but is that where you are today? This is an
important question because a vital part of our journey as Christians is knowing where we
are in our faith…honestly.
We live busy lives in a loud world…a world that pulls at us in different directions. Its
offers of fleshly promises and desires can sometimes make us think that we need
something besides Jesus at any particular moment. As God’s children, we know that those
things are empty and ultimately fleeting, but they compete with our God-given longing for
Christ. It might seem often that instead of longing for Jesus, where we really are is that we
are longing to long for Him. In our spirit we know that we were created ONLY for Christ,
and that our one desire should be to
be saturated with Him, and His truth.
In Psalm 63, David says “O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul
thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is
no water. I have seen you in your sanctuary and gazed upon your power and glory. Your
unfailing love is better than life itself; how I praise you!” This expression of yearning with
words like “earnestly search”, “thirsts”, and “long” are appropriate for a child of God. His
yearning for his Heavenly Father is beyond all else in his life. In Philippians, Paul
expresses that he longs to be with Christ above any earthly venture.
Longing to long leads us to actually long. As children of Christ this is the posture we want
to have. As you worship Jesus day to day, it is good to ask Him to cause your spirit to burn
with a true and deep longing for Christ and only Christ.
